Article metadata, API and MCP access

This page lists the current status of article metadata, public read API access and MCP access.

Metadata is the bibliographic information attached to an article, such as its title, authors, journal, publication date and licence. Bibliographic metadata is included in article HTML from the first publication.

Because bibliographic records can be difficult to correct after release, required metadata is treated as a publication requirement, not a later fix.

Current status of metadata and machine access

In development means work has begun, but the feature is not yet active on published articles. Planned means the feature is intended, but work has not yet begun.

  • Highwire tags in article HTMLIn developmentHighwire citation tags are implemented in the article template ahead of first publication. They are not claimed as active until published articles include them.
  • JSON-LD ScholarlyArticleIn developmentJSON-LD ScholarlyArticle metadata is included on each article page. It is not claimed as active until published articles include it.
  • Public read APIPlannedA documented public read API is planned. It will open once there is enough published content to serve. No documented public API is available yet.
  • MCP serverPlannedMCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for AI assistants to access data. An MCP server is planned for machine access to published article metadata and records. It will open only after there are published article records to expose. No MCP server is available yet.
